Plan First

Before You Build

Size for a comfortable reach

Measure your space and choose a width you can reach across comfortably — most people like 3–4 ft. Leave room to walk and move a wheelbarrow around the bed.

Choose outdoor-ready materials

Cedar lasts longest outdoors; pine is the budget-friendly option. Use stainless or coated screws, and a breathable design so the bed holds up over time.

Plan water and soil first

Install drip irrigation before filling the bed, and use a balanced soil mix that drains well, feeds your plants, and keeps its structure over the seasons.

A raised bed with an overhead trellis beam is perfect for vertically grown tomatoes and other vining crops — and leaves room for hanging baskets.

Watering & Irrigation

Set up drip irrigation

Drip irrigation delivers water right to the roots, saves water, and can go on a timer. Our guide walks through the full setup for raised beds.

The checklist makes sure you don't miss a step — from tubing to emitters to a seasonal schedule.

Trellises & Structures

Build a cedar trellis

A cedar garden trellis gives tomatoes, beans, and cucumbers something to climb — keeping them off the ground and making harvest easier.

The project page walks through the build, and the free PDF plans include a cut list and dimensions.

Securing hardware cloth to a raised bed

Protect & Improve

Pest-proof your beds

Hardware cloth is one of the most effective upgrades you can make to a raised bed — it keeps gophers, voles, and burrowing pests out for good.

Learn why it matters, how to size it, and how to install it during your build.
